Did you ever know a serious emotion to express itself in a subordinate clause?

Sayers’ novel Clouds of Witness, a Lord Peter Wimsey mystery. IMBd credits both Sayers and Anthony Stevens as writers, but because the line is used solely to create atmosphere, and Sayers died in 1957, I doubt it was her idea.
